Slippin’ Through Shapes – Lick of The Week #22

Continuing with last week’s theme of moving between shapes, Emiliano Bonanomi takes us through a slippery little lick in A minor. This rapid lick is another great example of how moving between scale shapes horizontally can really open up the fretboard. Emiliano makes use of a lot of slides to facilitate his effortless movement up the neck. This results in giving the lick a very fast and fluid feel to it.
Broken down, however, you can see that whilst the lick may sound fast and fluid, it’s actually based on the familiar shapes of the pentatonic scale. This makes it very accessible to players of all levels, despite how fast it may seem. Learning this lick will also give you a healthy dose of practice in bends and vibrato techniques. Although, you might want to crank up the gain to replicate those beautiful sustained notes at the end!!
If you want to learn more about the scales and techniques used in this lick, you can find them in Level 3 of our online guitar syllabus. Our syllabus covers the six fundamentals of guitar playing over five levels and will take you from a beginner to expert.
