Pentatonic Phrasing – Lick of The Week #15

by | October 11, 2019

This week Joe Garrett treats us to a masterclass in combining multiple shapes of the minor pentatonic scale. This series of licks demonstrates some really cool examples of phrasing within a pentatonic context. Moving from shape 5 into shapes 1 and 2, Joe shows us how to tie melodic ideas across the fretboard.

On top of that, there is an array of different techniques used throughout this piece. From slides and bends to hammer-ons and pinched harmonics, each technique adds so much character and nuance to these licks. You’ll also find tonnes of subtle articulations such as accents, grace notes, and legato slurring throughout this one. All of this adds up to make one really fun set of licks to play. So plug-in, turn up, and get ready for some awesome pentatonic scale action!
